Guardian Program

Become a forever family for one of our pick-of-the-litter breeding dogs.

About the Program

At Pretty Paws, we believe every dog deserves to be a beloved family pet first and foremost. We do not use kennels. Instead, we utilize a Guardian Home Program, which allows our breeding dogs to live their entire lives as cherished family members while still participating in our breeding program.

As a Guardian Home, you will receive a top-tier, "pick of the litter" puppy at no upfront cost. The dog remains the property of Pretty Paws until their breeding career is over (typically 3-4 litters for females, or up to 6 years of age for males). Once they retire, we pay for their spay/neuter, and full ownership is legally transferred to you.

Requirements:

  • Must live within a 2-hour drive of our home.
  • Must own your home and have a fully fenced yard.
  • Must have previous dog ownership experience.
  • Must be willing to communicate regularly and transport the dog for health testing and breeding.
  • Must keep the dog well-groomed, properly socialized, and up-to-date on standard vet care.

Guardian Contract Overview

Standard terms and conditions of our guardian program

1. Ownership and Breeding Rights

Pretty Paws retains full legal ownership and all breeding rights of the dog until the completion of this contract. The Guardian Family agrees not to breed the dog under any circumstances.

2. Breeder Responsibilities

Pretty Paws will cover all costs related to breeding, including genetic testing, OFA evaluations, ultrasounds, x-rays, and whelping supplies. We will also cover the cost of the final spay/neuter upon retirement.

3. Guardian Responsibilities

The Guardian Family is responsible for all standard pet care costs, including high-quality dog food (approved by breeder), routine veterinary care (annual exams, vaccines, flea/tick/heartworm prevention), grooming every 6-8 weeks, and pet insurance.

4. Whelping and Litters (Females)

Female dogs will come to the breeder's home approximately one week before their due date and will stay until the puppies are fully weaned (around 6-7 weeks of age). Guardian families are welcome and encouraged to visit the mother and puppies during this time.

5. Stud Services (Males)

Male dogs will occasionally be needed for breeding services. This typically requires the dog to be available for 2-5 days at a time. The Guardian Family must be flexible and willing to coordinate drop-offs/pick-ups with short notice.
