Understanding Generations

Paw Print

Decoding the letters and numbers behind Doodle generations to help you find the perfect coat type for your family's allergy and grooming needs.

F1 Generation

50% Poodle + 50% Golden Retriever/Cavalier

The first generation cross. They typically have a loose, wavy coat. While they shed less than a purebred Retriever or Cavalier, they are not strictly hypoallergenic and may still shed mildly.

F1b Generation

25% Golden Retriever/Cavalier + 75% Poodle

A backcross of an F1 to a purebred Poodle. This generation produces a much curlier coat and is highly recommended for families with moderate to severe allergies as they are typically non-shedding.

Multigen (F2, F3, etc.)

Doodle + Doodle

Breeding two Doodles together (like an F1b to an F1b). Multigens offer the most consistency in coat type, size, and shedding. They almost always have a plush, non-shedding fleece or curly coat perfect for allergy sufferers.
